SATISH MELWANI

Western Pacific

My name is Satish Melwani. I’m from India (Studying In Australia). I speak English and Hindi. Talk to me about Digital health literacy, maternal and child health, and Non communicable diseases prevention.

I am a PhD candidate in public health at University of Tasmania working on co-designing health literacy solutions with pregnant women and mothers to reduce the inter-generational impact of Non-Communicable diseases (NCDs). Received Full PhD scholarship plus living allowance for 3.5 years from the University of Tasmania to complete my PhD. In addition, I have worked with the World Health Organisation’s Headquarters in Geneva on enhancing health literacy to accelerate prevention, control and management of NCDs globally. The innovation in digital health space has been remarkable. If used appropriately, it provides us a space to reach people who are already missing out from the existing services.

I facilitated an WHO’s online community of practice on Health Literacy and NCDs during my Internship at the WHO HQ. This virtual CoP connected experts from more than 40 countries (both high income and low and middle income countries) and helped us to gain global insights (strengths, challenges and gaps) on what different countries are doing to reduce the growing burden of NCDs. The power of digital technology helped us to reach people whose voices were missing from existing policies and helped us to understand their needs and priority areas to curb the growing burden of NCDs. The findings from this CoP helped us to develop recommendations for the high level commission on NCDs to be implemented at global level.

You’d be surprised to know I am huge cricket and football fan. I love cycling and cooking (mostly fusion of various cuisines). Amusing fact about me is I believe in Batman.
